Agiolax is used for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.\u003cbr\u003e Contact your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 7 days.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eWhat you need to know before taking the medicine\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eDo not use AGIOLAX\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - if you are allergic to Ispaghula seed, Ispaghula husk and Senna fruit or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from abdominal pain even of unknown origin,\u003cbr\u003e - if you have episodes of nausea or vomiting,\u003cbr\u003e - if you have a bowel obstruction,\u003cbr\u003e - if you have a stenosis (narrowing) of your esophagus (the food pipe that leads from your throat to your stomach) or gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines),\u003cbr\u003e - if you have rectal bleeding of unknown origin,\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from a severe state of dehydration (excessive loss of water from the body),\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), hiatus hernia (protrusion of a part of the stomach upwards) or conditions that involve the risk of regurgitation (for example if you are confined to bed), \u003cbr\u003e- if you suffer from a loss of normal bowel function (colonic atony) or have a hard, bulky mass of stool in your intestine caused by constipation (faecal impaction),\u003cbr\u003e - if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (see section Pregnancy and breast-feeding),\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis or appendicitis),\u003cbr\u003e - if the subject to be treated is under 12 years old\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eWarnings and precautions\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Agiolax.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eHealth education notes\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e First of all, it must be kept in mind that, in most cases, a balanced diet rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can permanently solve the problem of constipation.\u003cbr\u003e Many people think they are constipated if they are unable to have a bowel movement every day.\u003cbr\u003e This is a misconception as this situation is completely normal for a large number of individuals. \u003cbr\u003eConsider, instead, that constipation occurs when evacuations are reduced compared to one's personal habits and are associated with the emission of hard stools.\u003cbr\u003e If episodes of constipation occur repeatedly, a doctor should be consulted.\u003cbr\u003e Laxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients.\u003cbr\u003e In more serious cases, dehydration (excessive loss of water from the body) or hypokalaemia (decrease in potassium in the blood) may occur, which may cause heart or muscle problems, especially if you are taking certain medicines at the same time (see Other medicines and Agiolax).\u003cbr\u003e Laxative abuse can cause dependence (and, therefore, the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and intestinal atony (loss of normal intestinal functions). \u003cbr\u003eDuring treatment with Agiolax it is necessary to ingest a large quantity of water (6-8 glasses a day) to prevent the onset of intestinal obstruction.\u003cbr\u003e Agiolax should be used only if a therapeutic effect cannot be achieved by modifying the diet or by administering bulk laxatives.\u003cbr\u003e Tell your doctor if you are taking thyroid medicines.\u003cbr\u003e After oral intake or contact with skin Agiolax may cause hypersensitivity reactions (allergies), see \"Possible side effects\".\u003cbr\u003e Abdominal pain, spasms and diarrhoea may occur, especially in case of pre-existing irritable bowel syndrome (altered intestinal mobility), see \"Possible side effects\".\u003cbr\u003e Some symptoms may also arise following an overdose; in this circumstance it is necessary to reduce the dose (see \"If you take more AGIOLAX than you should\").\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003ePossible side effects\u003c\/b\u003e \u003cbr\u003eLike all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.\u003cbr\u003e If you experience any of the following symptoms, STOP using Agiolax immediately and contact your doctor or the nearest hospital where you will be given appropriate and specific treatment:\u003cbr\u003e - Hypersensitivity reactions (allergic reactions)\u003cbr\u003e - Anaphylactic reactions (severe allergic reactions)\u003cbr\u003e - Skin rash and itching.\u003cbr\u003e Abdominal colic (painful contractions of the visceral muscles) may occur. These occur more frequently in cases of severe constipation or irritable bowel syndrome (a condition of altered intestinal motility).\u003cbr\u003e The following side effects may also occur:\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eRare\u003c\/b\u003e (may affect up to 1 in 1000 people):\u003cbr\u003e - Flatulence (emission of intestinal gas from the anus)\u003cbr\u003e - Abdominal distension (bloated belly)\u003cbr\u003e - Chromaturia (abnormal coloration of urine), due to the presence of senna components \u003cbr\u003e\u003cb\u003eVery rare\u003c\/b\u003e (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):\u003cbr\u003e - Obstruction of the esophagus (food pipe that goes from the throat to the stomach)\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eNot known\u003c\/b\u003e (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data)\u003cbr\u003e - Nausea\u003cbr\u003e - Vomit\u003cbr\u003e - Diarrhea\u003cbr\u003e - Albuminuria [loss of albumin (a protein) in the urine], from prolonged use\u003cbr\u003e - Hematuria (blood in the urine), from prolonged use.\u003cbr\u003e In addition, colonic melanosis (coloration of the intestinal mucosa) has been reported, which recedes after discontinuation of the drug.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eReporting of side effects\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
