The laxative effect is obtained thanks to the ability of glycerol to soften the feces and to cause a slight local irritant action that stimulates intestinal movements.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This medicine is indicated for the symptomatic relief of occasional and transient constipation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short time of treatment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eWhat you need to know before taking the medicine\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eDo not use GLICEROLO CARLO ERBA if:\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e • are allergic to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6); \u003cbr\u003e• have nausea or vomiting, a blockage or narrowing (stenosis) of the intestine, or any abdominal pain for which you do not know the cause;\u003cbr\u003e • has pain and\/or bleeding from the rectum (for example in case of haemorrhoids);\u003cbr\u003e • is in a severe state of dehydration manifested by dry and sticky mouth, thirst, scarcity of urine, absence or scarcity of tears and dry skin.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eWarnings and precautions\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Laxatives should be used as infrequently as possible and for no more than 7 days; use for longer periods of time requires a doctor's prescription. During treatment, drink at least 6-8 glasses of water, or other liquids, to help soften the stool. \u003cbr\u003eAbuse of laxatives can cause dependence (with the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony). In addition, abuse may cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water (dehydration), mineral salts, especially potassium (hypokalemia) and other essential nutritional factors. The loss of mineral salts causes alterations in the ions present in the blood (electrolytes) characterized by the following symptoms: thirst, vomiting, weakness, edema, bone pain (osteomalacia) and hypoalbuminemia.
