The use of excessive doses of iodine in mothers during breastfeeding may increase the iodine level in breast milk and cause transient hypothyroidism in infants.\u003cbr\u003e The use of iodine, even when applied topically, is generally to be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Prolonged application may cause irritation and causticity of the treated surface, therefore the medicine should not be used for prolonged treatments. \u003cbr\u003eThe medicine should be applied only on intact and undamaged skin, because in addition to causing irritation, it delays the healing of wounds and abrasions. Use, especially if prolonged, can give rise to sensitization phenomena. In this case, stop treatment and contact your doctor who can adopt appropriate therapeutic measures. To avoid excessive absorption of iodine, do not cover the treated skin area with occlusive dressings. In case of use for prolonged periods on large body surfaces, on mucous membranes or under occlusive dressings, especially in children and patients with thyroid disorders, it is necessary to perform thyroid function tests.\u003cbr\u003e Since iodine can alter thyroid function, it is recommended to use it with caution in subjects with thyroid disease, in patients over 45 years of age or with goiter.\u003cbr\u003e In pediatric age, use only in cases of real need and under medical supervision. \u003cbr\u003eDiscontinue treatment at least 10 days before performing a scintigraphy with labeled iodine.\u003cbr\u003e Treatment may alter the results of thyroid function tests, especially in premature infants.\u003cbr\u003e After a short period of treatment without appreciable results, consult your doctor.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003ePossible side effects\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Like all medicines, iodine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
