Use for longer periods of time requires a doctor's prescription after adequate evaluation of the individual case. \u003cbr\u003eTreatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires the intervention of a doctor for diagnosis, prescription of drugs and monitoring during therapy.\u003cbr\u003e In children between 6 and 12 years of age the medicine can only be used after consulting a doctor.\u003cbr\u003e The medicine should preferably be administered in the evening (in any case at least one hour before going to bed) because the peristaltic movements are slowed down and the laxative can remain in the intestine longer with consequent improvement of its effect.\u003cbr\u003e It is important to avoid lying down or tilting your head back when taking liquid paraffin to avoid aspiration of drops of the medicine.\u003cbr\u003e Rarely, particularly in young children, the elderly or debilitated patients, inadvertent aspiration of liquid paraffin may cause aspiration pneumonia. \u003cbr\u003eLaxative abuse (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) can cause persistent diarrhea with consequent loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients.\u003cbr\u003e In the most serious cases, dehydration or hypokalemia (decrease in potassium in the blood) may occur, which can cause cardiac or neuromuscular dysfunction, especially in the case of concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides, diuretics or corticosteroids.\u003cbr\u003e Abuse of laxatives, especially contact laxatives (stimulant laxatives), can cause dependence (and therefore the possible need to gradually increase the dosage), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).\u003cbr\u003e Abuse of liquid paraffin laxatives can cause reduced absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, K). \u003cbr\u003eIn cases of constipation, it is recommended first of all to correct eating habits by integrating the daily diet with an adequate intake of fiber and water.\u003cbr\u003e When using laxatives, it is important to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water or other liquids a day to help soften the stool.\u003cbr\u003e Consult your doctor when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts more than two weeks or when the use of a laxative fails to produce effects. It is also advisable for elderly or unhealthy subjects to consult their doctor before using the medicine.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003ePossible side effects\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Like all medicines, liquid paraffin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. \u003cbr\u003eThe following are side effects of liquid paraffin.
