If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. • \u003cem\u003edo not use acetylsalicylic acid together with another NSAID or, in any case, do not use more than one NSAID at a time.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eAllergic reactions\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Acetylsalicylic acid and other NSAIDs may cause allergic reactions [including asthma attacks, rhinitis (runny nose), angioedema (swelling of the skin and mucous membranes) or urticaria (small itchy spots on the skin)]. \u003cbr\u003eThe risk is higher in subjects who have already had an allergic reaction after using this type of medicine in the past and in subjects who have allergic reactions (e.g. skin reactions, itching, hives) to other substances.\u003cbr\u003e In subjects with asthma and\/or rhinitis (with or without nasal polyposis) and\/or urticaria, reactions may be more frequent and severe.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eTell your doctor if:\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - you are undergoing surgery (even a minor one such as tooth extraction), as pre-operative use of this medicine may make it more difficult to stop bleeding during surgery (intraoperative haemostasis);\u003cbr\u003e - you should perform a test for occult blood, since acetylsalicylic acid can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eIn the following cases, your doctor will prescribe this medicine only after a careful risk\/benefit assessment:\u003c\/b\u003e \u003cbr\u003e- if you have a higher risk of allergic reactions, for example if you suffer from asthma and\/or rhinitis (with or without nasal polyps) and\/or urticaria;\u003cbr\u003e - if you have an increased risk of gastrointestinal lesions, since acetylsalicylic acid and other NSAIDs can cause serious gastrointestinal side effects (bleeding, ulcer, perforation); for this reason these medicines must not be used in subjects who suffer or have suffered in the past from gastrointestinal ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding (see \"Do not take ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID LFM\") or who consume large quantities of alcohol or higher doses of acetylsalicylic acid (dose-related effect);\u003cbr\u003e - if you have blood clotting problems or if you are undergoing treatment with anticoagulant medicines (used to slow down or inhibit the blood clotting process);\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from impaired kidney, heart or liver function;\u003cbr\u003e - if you suffer from asthma; \u003cbr\u003e- if you have hyperuricemia\/gout (increased level of uric acid in the blood.\u003cbr\u003e It is also advisable to consult your doctor if the above-mentioned disorders have occurred in the past.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - if you are taking any medicines that are not recommended or that require special precautions or dosage adjustment (see \"Other medicines and ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID LFM\");\u003cbr\u003e - if you are over 70 years of age, especially in the presence of concomitant therapies;\u003cbr\u003e - if you are in the first or second trimester of pregnancy (see \"Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility\").\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eChildren and adolescents\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This medicine should not be taken by children and adolescents under 16 years of age.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eElderly people\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The risk of serious side effects is higher in older people.\u003cbr\u003e If you are over 70 years of age, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003ePossible side effects\u003c\/b\u003e \u003cbr\u003eLike all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.\u003cbr\u003e The most frequently observed side effects involve the gastrointestinal system.\u003cbr\u003e These symptoms can be partially alleviated by taking the medicine on a full stomach. Most side effects are dependent on both the dose and the duration of treatment.\u003cbr\u003e The side effects observed with acetylsalicylic acid are generally common to other NSAIDs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eThe following side effects may occur:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Effects on the blood\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - prolonged bleeding time,\u003cbr\u003e - anemia due to gastrointestinal bleeding,\u003cbr\u003e - reduction of platelets (thrombocytopenia) in extremely rare cases. \u003cbr\u003eFollowing hemorrhage, acute and chronic post-hemorrhagic\/iron deficiency anemia (due, for example, to occult microhemorrhages) may occur with related alterations in laboratory parameters and related clinical signs and symptoms such as asthenia (tiredness), pallor and hypoperfusion (reduced blood supply to the tissues).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the nervous system\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - heachache,\u003cbr\u003e - dizziness.\u003cbr\u003e Rarely, the following may occur:\u003cbr\u003e - Reye's syndrome (*), an acute, potentially fatal disease of the brain and liver that affects almost exclusively children.\u003cbr\u003e Rarely to very rarely, the following may occur:\u003cbr\u003e - cerebral haemorrhage, especially in patients with uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure) and\/or on anticoagulant therapy (medicines used to slow down or inhibit the blood clotting process), which, in isolated cases, can be life-threatening.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the ear\u003c\/b\u003e \u003cbr\u003e- tinnitus (ringing\/buzzing\/ringing\/ringing in the ear).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the respiratory system\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - asthmatic syndrome,\u003cbr\u003e - rhinitis (runny nose)\u003cbr\u003e - nasal congestion (blocked nose) (associated with allergic reactions);\u003cbr\u003e - epistaxis (nosebleed).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the heart\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - cardiorespiratory distress (severe and acute respiratory failure) (associated with allergic reactions).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the eye\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - conjunctivitis (associated with allergic reactions).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the gastrointestinal system\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - gastrointestinal bleeding (occult),\u003cbr\u003e - gastric disorders,\u003cbr\u003e - heartburn (pyrosis),\u003cbr\u003e - gastrointestinal pain,\u003cbr\u003e - gingivorrhagia (bleeding gums),\u003cbr\u003e - vomit,\u003cbr\u003e - diarrhea,\u003cbr\u003e - nausea,\u003cbr\u003e - crampy abdominal pain (associated with allergic reactions).\u003cbr\u003e Rarely, the following may occur:\u003cbr\u003e - gastrointestinal inflammation,\u003cbr\u003e - gastrointestinal erosion,\u003cbr\u003e - gastrointestinal ulceration,\u003cbr\u003e - hematemesis (vomiting blood or \"coffee ground\" material), \u003cbr\u003e- melena (emission of black, tarry stools),\u003cbr\u003e - esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus).\u003cbr\u003e Very rarely, the following may occur:\u003cbr\u003e - haemorrhagic gastrointestinal ulcer and\/or gastrointestinal perforation with related clinical signs and symptoms and alterations in laboratory parameters.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the liver\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - rarely: hepatotoxicity (generally mild and asymptomatic hepatocellular damage) manifested by an increase in transaminases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the skin\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - skin rash,\u003cbr\u003e - edema (swelling),\u003cbr\u003e - hives,\u003cbr\u003e - itching,\u003cbr\u003e - erythema (redness),\u003cbr\u003e - angioedema (associated with allergic reactions).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the kidneys and urinary tract\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - alteration of renal function (in the presence of conditions of altered blood circulation in the kidneys),\u003cbr\u003e - urogenital bleeding (urinary and genital tract).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the organism as a whole\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - perioperative bleeding (immediately before, during and immediately after surgery), \u003cbr\u003e- hematomas (collections of blood outside the blood vessels).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cb\u003eEffects on the immune system\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cbr\u003e - rarely: anaphylactic shock (severe allergic reaction, potentially fatal) with related alterations in laboratory parameters and clinical manifestations.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Other side effects that may occur:\u003cbr\u003e - delay in delivery.\u003cbr\u003e   \u003cbr\u003e(*) Reye's Syndrome (RS) RS initially manifests itself with vomiting (persistent or recurrent) and with other signs of encephalic suffering of varying degrees: from listlessness, drowsiness or personality changes (irritability or aggressiveness) to disorientation, confusion or delirium up to convulsions or loss of consciousness. The variability of the clinical picture must be taken into account: vomiting may also be absent or replaced by diarrhoea.
