What it is and what it is used for
CEROXTERIL is used for disinfecting and cleaning the skin in the presence of small superficial wounds, minor bedsores (skin lesions affecting parts of the body subjected to pressure for prolonged periods), and minor burns (scalds) (first degree).
The product can be used to prepare the surgical field.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use CEROXTERIL
If you are allergic to chlorhexidine digluconate or benzalkonium chloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using CEROXTERIL.
CEROXTERIL should only be applied to the outside of the body or to the surfaces of the operating table.
The product should not be used for long-term treatments. If you do not get results in a short period of time, you should consult your doctor.
CEROXTERIL, especially if used for long periods, may cause sensitization. In this case, stop using the product and consult a doctor promptly.
The product may be irritating and cause skin reactions.
The product should not be applied into the ear canal and should not come into contact with the meninges and brain.
Ceroxteril should not come into contact with the eyes due to the risk of vision damage. If it comes into contact with the eyes, rinse immediately and thoroughly with water. If irritation, redness or pain in the eye or visual disturbance occurs, seek medical advice immediately.
Serious cases of permanent corneal trauma (damage to the surface of the eye) have been reported following accidental contact of similar products with the eye during surgery on patients under general anesthesia (induced deep sleep). Such injuries may require corneal transplantation.
Do not ingest or breathe this product as it may have serious, even fatal, consequences.
After applying the product, do not expose it to ultraviolet rays from the sun or lamps.
In case of accidental ingestion, consult a doctor immediately.
Chlorhexidine may cause hypersensitivity, including anaphylactic shock and allergic reactions. If any of these reactions occur, discontinue use of the product and consult a doctor promptly.
Children and adolescents
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using CEROXTERIL on children or adolescents.
CEROXTERIL can cause chemical burns in newborns, especially those born prematurely.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this product can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Burning or skin irritation (intolerance) may occur. These effects are generally transient and do not usually require changes in treatment.
Frequency not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
- burns (chemical burns) in newborns.
- corneal trauma (damage to the surface of the eye) and permanent eye damage, including permanent visual impairment (following accidental exposure of the eyes during head, face and neck surgery) in patients under general anaesthesia (induced deep sleep).
