SODIUM PHOSPHATE PHARMACOPOEIA 16%/6% rectal solution
Sodium phosphate monobasic dihydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic dodecahydrate
What it is and what it is used for
SODIUM PHOSPHATE FARMAKOPEA contains the active ingredients sodium phosphate monobasic dihydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic dodecahydrate, which belong to the group of laxative medicines used to soften and lubricate stools, facilitating their passage through the intestine and evacuation. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of constipation and to empty the intestine in case of surgical operations or certain clinical examinations, such as radiological examinations or intestinal explorations.
Contact your doctor if you notice no improvement or if you notice worsening of symptoms after a short period of treatment.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use SODIUM PHOSPHATE PHARMACOPOEIA
- if you are allergic to sodium phosphate monobasic dihydrate, sodium phosphate dibasic dodecahydrate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you experience sharp pain in the abdomen or other parts of the body (pain of unknown origin);
- if you feel nauseated or sick;
- if you suffer from blockage or narrowing of the intestine (intestinal occlusion or stenosis or anorectal stenosis);
- if you suffer from partial intestinal blockage (intestinal sub-occlusion);
- if you suffer from particular intestinal problems such as mechanical ileus, paralytic ileus, inflammation or other conditions that may increase the absorption of the medicine;
- if you experience problems in the lower part of the intestine such as rectal bleeding, pain, haemorrhoids or anal perforation;
- if you suffer from congenital or acquired megacolon;
- if you suffer from Hirschsprung's disease;
- if you are severely dehydrated;
- if the person who is to take the medicine is a child under 12 years of age;
- if you suffer from heart and/or kidney problems (severe renal failure);
- if you experience increased levels of phosphate in your blood (hyperphosphatemia).
Do not take other preparations containing sodium phosphates at the same time, including oral solutions or sodium phosphate tablets (see section “Other medicines and SODIUM PHOSPHATE PHARMACOPOEIA”).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using SODIUM PHOSPHATE FARMAKOPEA.
If you use this medicine excessively, frequently or incorrectly, you may experience long-lasting diarrhoea, resulting in loss of water, minerals (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients. Drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration, especially if you are prone to dehydration. In more serious cases, you may experience dehydration and low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalaemia), which may cause problems with your heart, nerves and muscles, especially if you are also taking medicines to stimulate the heart (cardiac glycosides), to increase urine production (diuretics), medicines called corticosteroids, medicines to treat high blood pressure (such as sartans and ACE inhibitors) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs).
Since SODIUM PHOSPHATE FARMAKOPEA contains sodium phosphates, there is a risk of alterations in the levels of salt (potassium, sodium, phosphate or calcium) in the body, which may occur with clinical signs such as tetany and renal failure.
If you use this medicine excessively or incorrectly, you may develop dependence (with the consequent need to gradually increase the dose), long-lasting (chronic) constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).
Avoid prolonged use of this medicine.
Contact your doctor if:
- has been constipated for more than 2 weeks;
- notices changes in your usual bowel movements;
- note changes in stool characteristics;
- you do not experience any improvement after using this medicine.
Stop using the medicine if you encounter resistance, as forceful use of the enema may cause injury.
If you suffer from constipation, first of all correct your eating habits, drinking an adequate amount of fiber and water (6-8 glasses a day) and doing physical activity. In most cases, a balanced diet rich in water and fiber (bran, vegetables and fruit) can permanently solve the problem of constipation. Many people mistakenly think they suffer from constipation if they are unable to evacuate every day, in fact this situation is often completely normal. True constipation occurs when evacuations are fewer in number than usual and are associated with the emission of hard stools.
If constipation episodes occur repeatedly, consult your doctor.
Use this medicine with caution and after consulting your doctor if you suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity (ascites), heart disease, ulcerations of the rectal tract or breaks in the skin of the rectal tract (fissures).
Children
This medicine should not be used in children under 12 years of age.
Elderly people
If you are elderly, use this medicine with caution and after consulting your doctor, especially if you are not in good health.
