What it is and what it is used for
Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere contains the active ingredients sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, which belong to a group of medicines called laxatives.
which act by stimulating intestinal movements, accelerating the passage of its contents.
Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere is used in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over for:
- treatment of constipation;
- empty the bowel before and after an operation or in preparation for a bowel examination.

Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a short time of treatment.


What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere

- if you are allergic to sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate, sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
- if you have a severe stomach ache, or any pain whose cause you do not know,
- if you feel nauseous or vomit,
- if you suffer from obstruction or narrowing of the intestine or anus (intestinal stenosis, anorectal stenosis),
- if you suffer from difficult intestinal transit (intestinal sub-occlusion),
- if you suffer from an obstruction of the passage of intestinal contents (paralytic ileus), if it is due to a real obstacle (mechanical ileus)
- if you suffer from inflammation of the intestine or other conditions that may increase the absorption of the medicine;
- if you have a perforation of the anal wall
- if you have a large dilation of the colon, from birth or acquired (megacolon)
- if you suffer from a congenital disease of the colon which manifests itself with a strong difficulty in evacuation (Hirschsprung's disease) if you lose blood from the rectum and you do not know the cause,
- if you have hemorrhoids and they are bleeding,
- if you are severely dehydrated if you suffer from heart problems,
- if you suffer from severe kidney disease (renal failure),
- if you have high levels of phosphate in your blood.
Do not give Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere to children under 12 years of age.

Do not use Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere together with other medicines containing sodium phosphate (oral solutions or tablets) see section “Other medicines and Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere”


Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere.
Like all laxatives, do not use Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere daily or for prolonged periods without first having your doctor evaluate the cause of your constipation. The treatment of chronic or recurrent constipation always requires the intervention of a doctor for diagnosis, prescription of medications and monitoring during therapy.

Consult your doctor before using this medicine:
– when the need for a laxative arises from a sudden change in previous bowel habits (frequency and characteristics of bowel movements) that lasts for more than two weeks or when the use of a laxative fails to produce any effects,
– if you are elderly or in poor health, or if you suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, fluid in the abdomen (ascites), rectal ulcers.

Because forcibly administering the enema may cause injury, stop administering if you encounter resistance.

Please note that:
- prolonged use of a laxative to treat constipation is not recommended.
- to treat constipation, medicines must only be an aid to hygienic-dietary treatment (e.g. increasing vegetable fibre and liquids in the diet, regular physical activity, etc.)
- you should drink at least 6-8 glasses of water, or other liquids during treatment with laxatives in order to help soften the stool
- it is advisable to correct your eating habits by integrating your diet with more fibre and water, during episodes of constipation

If you abuse laxatives (frequent or prolonged use or excessive doses) you may experience:
- persistent diarrhea resulting in loss of water, mineral salts (especially potassium) and other essential nutrients.
- in more serious cases, dehydration or a decrease in potassium in the blood may occur, which can cause heart or nerve and muscle dysfunction, especially if you are simultaneously taking heart medicines (digitalis), medicines to increase urine production (diuretics) or cortisone (anti-inflammatories).
Drink fluids to prevent dehydration, especially if you are predisposed to this condition or if you are using medicines such as diuretics, or if you are undergoing therapy for the treatment of arterial hypertension (ACE inhibitors), heart failure or use anti-inflammatory , analgesic and antipyretic drugs (NSAIDs).
• Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere contains sodium phosphates with the possibility of increased sodium and phosphate levels and concomitant decrease in calcium and potassium which can cause muscle cramps (tetany) and renal failure.
- dependence (and, therefore, the need to increase the dose), chronic constipation and loss of normal intestinal functions (intestinal atony).
- may give rise to addiction or damage of various types

Children
Do not use Sodium Phosphate Polifarma Benessere in children under 12 years of age.


Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following side effects may occur:

Effects affecting the stomach and intestines and are more frequent in cases of severe constipation and irritation at the rectal level.
• Pain and cramps
• abdominal colic, diarrhea with loss of salts and water
• irritation of the lower part of the intestine (rectal irritation) nausea
• vomit

Effects on metabolism and nutrition
• High levels of phosphate in the blood (hyperphosphatemia)
• low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia)
• tissue calcification
• low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia)
• high levels of sodium in the blood (hypernatremia)

Effects on the immune system
• Allergic reactions such as hives

Effects on the skin and subcutaneous tissue
• Blisters
• itching
• burning
