What it is and what it is used for
ALTERGEN is a medicine that contains 2 active substances: hyaluronic acid and silver sulfadiazine.
Hyaluronic acid is a very important element for the human body: it is naturally present for example in the skin, the eye and cartilage, and accelerates the healing process of wounds.
Silver sulfadiazine is an antibiotic belonging to the class of sulfonamides, drugs that kill certain types of germs, providing protection against the infections they cause.
ALTERGEN is used to treat skin lesions such as sores, wounds due to blood circulation disorders (varicose ulcers) or burns (scalds).
Contact your doctor if you notice no improvement or if you notice worsening of symptoms after a short period of treatment.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use ALTERGEN:
• if you are allergic to silver sulfadiazine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
• during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically indicated by your doctor;
• in premature babies and newborns in the first months of life.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using ALTERGEN if:
• have had allergic reactions after taking antibiotics belonging to the sulphonamide class;
• have kidney problems (renal failure) or liver problems (hepatic failure).
If you use ALTERGEN for a long time and/or on large parts of your body, your doctor may recommend blood tests to evaluate your white blood cell count.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects affecting the whole body (systemic) have occurred with oral intake of sulphonamides:
• more or less sudden appearance of skin lesions, for example spotty or widespread changes in colour (rashes);
• kidney problems (renal failure);
• inflammation of the liver (toxic hepatitis);
• blood changes such as a decrease in some types of white blood cells (agranulocytosis, leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
These side effects are unlikely to occur with the use of ALTERGEN, since ALTERGEN is applied directly to the affected area. However, if you use ALTERGEN on large areas of skin and/or for a very long period of time, these effects may still occur.
Reporting of side effects
