Excipients

Betadine® 10% cutaneous solution : glycerol, nonoxynol 9, sodium phosphate dibasic dihydrate, citric acid monohydrate, sodium hydroxide, purified water. Betadine® 5% cutaneous spray solution: glycerin, nonoxynol 9, sodium phosphate dibasic dihydrate, citric acid anhydrous, purified water, Propellant: nitrogen.

Therapeutic indications

Disinfection and cleaning of damaged skin (wounds, sores, etc.).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components. Use with caution in subjects with thyroid pathologies. Do not use in children under six months of age.

Dosage

Betadine® 10% cutaneous solution: Apply 2 times a day directly to small wounds and skin infections. A quantity of 5 ml of solution (containing 50 mg of iodine) is sufficient to treat an area of ​​approximately 15 cm on each side. For skin antisepsis: apply a protective layer of the brown solution until a medium intensity colour is obtained: a superficial film is formed which does not stain. Betadine® 5% cutaneous spray solution: Hold the vaporizer 10 cm from the skin and press the valve with the bottle in an upright position, spraying a medium intensity brown protective layer 2 times a day and leave to dry: a protective film with prolonged antimicrobial activity is formed. A bandage can be used after treatment. A quantity of 5 ml of solution (containing 50 mg of iodine) is sufficient to treat an area of ​​approximately 15 cm on each side. Caution, do not spray with the bottle tilted, avoid inhaling or breathing the vaporized liquid.

Warnings and precautions

Do not use for prolonged treatments. After a short period of treatment without appreciable results, it is advisable to consult a doctor. For external use only. Use, especially if prolonged, may give rise to sensitization phenomena. In this case, stop treatment and adopt appropriate therapeutic measures. Stop treatment at least 10 days before performing a scintigraphy with marked iodine. Avoid use on mucous membranes. In case of use for prolonged periods on large body surfaces or under occlusive dressings, particularly in children and patients with thyroid disorders, perform thyroid function tests. In pediatric age, use only in case of real need and under medical supervision. Accidental ingestion or inhalation of some disinfectants can have serious consequences, sometimes fatal. Avoid contact with eyes.

Interactions

Avoid the simultaneous use of other antiseptics and detergents. Do not use on the treated area, at the same time, products containing mercury salts or benzoin compounds.

Side effects

Burning or irritation may occur in some cases; in this case, discontinue treatment. Iodine's reaction with damaged tissue may delay healing. It may interfere with thyroid function tests.
