VetPen
Starter Kit
Description
Pen for the automatic administration of insulin, for veterinary use only.
The VetPen is equipped with special lubricated VetPen 29G/12mm needles. VetPen should always be used with 29G/12mm VetPen needles.
How to use
Inserting the cartridge
Before inserting, invert the insulin cartridge up and down at least 10 times until the insulin appears uniformly milky. Do not use if, even after thorough mixing, clumps are present in the insulin.
Remove the pen cap and unscrew the pen body from the cartridge holder. Make sure the internal piston is fully retracted. If the internal piston is out, screw it back in by grasping the two beveled sides of the white cylinder on the pen body with your thumb and forefinger. Twist the pen body until the internal piston is fully retracted.
Load the insulin cartridge into the holder, inserting the metal cap first.
Gently but firmly screw the cartridge holder onto the pen body.
Preparing the insulin pen
Remove the protective film from a new needle. Screw the needle directly onto the cartridge holder. Remove the outer protective cap from the needle. Replace the pen cap on the insulin pen. Invert the pen up and down at least 10 times.
It is important to remove all air from the cartridge before use to avoid injecting air and to ensure correct dosing. Select 1 unit on the dose selector.
Hold the pen upright with the needle pointing up. Gently tap the cartridge with your fingers several times to push any air bubbles into the top of the cartridge. Press the release button and hold it toward the needle until the starting line on the dose selector returns to the arrow on the pen body.
A small amount of insulin may leak from the needle before the pen is ready for use (for example, if the air has not yet been completely expelled). To confirm that the pen is properly primed, make sure that no air is visible through the cartridge window when rotating.
Your insulin pen is now set up and ready for use.
Administration of the dose to the animal
Make sure the arrow on the pen body is aligned with the starting line on the dose selector. Select the number of units needed according to your veterinarian's recommendations.
Never attempt to force the dose selector back, as this may damage the pen and cause incorrect dosing. If you accidentally select too high a dose, do not administer it to your pet. The incorrect dose must be completely expelled and disposed of appropriately (e.g., down a drain). Select the correct dose prescribed by your veterinarian.
Before injecting, make sure the arrow on the pen body points to the correct number of units on the dose selector.
The site and method of administration must be as directed by your veterinarian. The injection should be administered subcutaneously lateral to the midline of the back (2 to 5 cm), varying the injection site to the area between the shoulder blades and the loins. After inserting the needle, press the injection button toward the needle and hold it until the starting line on the dose selector returns to the arrow on the pen body. Releasing the button prematurely will result in incomplete delivery of the dose. After the starting line on the dose selector returns to the arrow on the pen body, wait at least 5 seconds before removing the needle from the skin. If your pet dislodges the needle, or if the needle is removed before at least 5 seconds have passed, do not administer another dose. Wait to give your pet his usual dose with the next injection.
If the dose selector stops before the starting line on the dose selector returns to the arrow on the pen body, your pet has not received a full dose. If only a partial dose has been administered, do not administer another dose. Wait until your pet's usual dose with the next injection.
If insulin drips spontaneously or squirts out of the needle when you remove the VetPen needle from the skin, a partial dose may have been administered. Do not administer another dose. Wait until your pet's usual dose with the next injection. Check that the VetPen is properly primed.
If insulin drips spontaneously or squirts out of the needle after two consecutive administrations, contact your veterinarian for advice on how to prepare and use the VetPen.
Removing the needle and replacing the cartridge
Insert the needle into the removal device and unscrew it. Press the blue button on the device to release the needle. Always check that the needle has been removed. Replace the cap on the pen. Dispose of used needles carefully, according to your veterinarian's recommendations or local regulations.
Before replacing the cartridge, always make sure the needle is removed to avoid accidental injury. Then, unscrew the cartridge holder from the pen body and remove the cartridge. Screw the internal piston back in by grasping the two beveled sides of the white cylinder on the pen body with your thumb and forefinger. Rotate the pen body until the internal piston is fully retracted. Then load the next cartridge.
Note: If the internal piston is not screwed back in properly, it may damage the VetPen.
Warnings
The VetPen should only be used after consulting your veterinarian.
Please refer to the Caninsulin cartridge package insert for insulin storage conditions before and during use.
VetPen is for use only with 2.7 ml Caninsulin cartridges.
Always ensure that the VetPen has been fully prepared according to the instructions in the package insert. Failure to follow the correct preparation procedures may result in an incorrect dose being administered.
To avoid potential damage to the VetPen, never select a dose and push the release button without a cartridge inserted in the holder.
A new needle must be used for each injection.
The needle must be removed with the appropriate device and safely disposed of immediately after each injection. Leaving the needle inserted can clog the needle, thus affecting the delivered dose.
Consult your veterinarian if you experience any difficulties during the injection or if your animal shows any changes in behavior or clinical condition.
Conservation
The VetPen should always be stored or transported without the needle and with the cap on. To clean the VetPen, wipe with a damp cloth. Do not immerse in water.
Shelf life when packaged intact: 60 months.
