Activated charcoal (activated charcoal, activated charcoal, or vegetal charcoal) is recommended to treat poisoning, reduce flatulence, reduce cholesterol levels, and treat problems with bile flow during pregnancy (cholestasis of pregnancy).
Its porosity is able to trap gases and other substances in such a way as to prevent their absorption or accumulation in the digestive system. Consequently, it is used to weaken a multitude of disorders related to the digestive system.
In particular, it is used as an antitoxic, thanks to its ability to adsorb and retain many poisons (it is not an effective antidote in poisoning by iron salts, cyanides, malathion and some organic solvents such as methanol or ethylene glycol; it is ineffective against the harmful action of corrosive acids and caustic alcohols).
Activated charcoal is also used in the dietary preparation for some clinical examinations (for example, upper abdominal ultrasound), to absorb intestinal gases that would prevent correct interpretation.
The typical porosity of activated charcoal is used to trap substances and gases in order to avoid their absorption or accumulation in the digestive system, which is why it is used in the presence of aerophagia, diarrhea, meteorism and flatulence, thanks also to the mild disinfectant effect at intestinal level.
The absorbent properties are valid for both gases and solid substances, which is why charcoal is also suitable for combating bad breath (it also retains some bacteria, carrying out a partial disinfectant action).
We must not forget its ability to absorb not only excess gas and liquids, but also drugs: charcoal should be taken away from meals and not in conjunction with the ingestion of other drugs (especially in the case of antibiotic treatments) so as not to counteract its absorption and for a maximum of 6-7 days.
Its use during pregnancy is absolutely not recommended because it could also absorb nutrients useful for the formation of the fetus.
How to use
The beneficial effect is obtained by taking 1 g at least 30 minutes before a meal and 4 tablets immediately after.
Food supplements are not intended as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of children under 3 years of age. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
