Name
Frobemucil 600 mg effervescent tablets
Equivalent Medicine
Acetylcysteine
What is it and what is it used for?
This medicine contains the active substance acetylcysteine, which belongs to a group of medicines called mucolytic expectorants, used to facilitate the elimination of mucus from the airways.
Frobemucil is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract diseases characterized by increased production of thick, viscous mucus (thick, viscous hypersecretion).
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not take Frobemucil
- if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (see section "Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility").
Frobemucil should not be used in children under 2 years of age (see section "Children").
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Frobemucil.
Take this medicine with caution and always under the supervision of your doctor in the following cases:
- if you suffer from an inflammatory disease of the bronchi called bronchial asthma. Stop taking the medicine immediately if you experience contraction of the bronchial muscles (bronchospasm);
- if you are intolerant to histamine, allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) may occur in case of therapy with Frobemucil;
- if you suffer or have suffered in the past from stomach and/or intestinal ulcers (peptic ulcers), especially if you are taking concomitant medicines with toxic effects on the stomach and/or intestines (gastro-damaging drugs).
This medicine may thin bronchial secretions and thus increase the volume of mucus within the bronchi, especially at the beginning of treatment. Therefore, if this occurs and you are unable to clear bronchial secretions by coughing (sputum), consult your doctor who will indicate a method to eliminate the mucus (postural drainage or bronchoaspiration).
If you smell a sulfurous odor, do not worry because this does not indicate any alteration of the medicine, but is due to the acetylcysteine.
Laboratory tests: Acetylcysteine may interfere with some blood and urine tests (colorimetric assays for salicylates and tests for ketones). Tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine before undergoing any tests.
Children
Frobemucil should not be administered to children under 2 years of age because their limited ability to clear bronchial secretions may obstruct the bronchi and prevent normal breathing.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):
- skin irritation characterized by red spots (exanthema).
Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):
- allergic reactions (hypersensitivity);
- headache (cephalalgia);
- ringing in the ears (tinnitus);
- increased heart rate (tachycardia);
- vomiting, diarrhea, inflammation of the mouth (stomatitis), abdominal pain, nausea;
- fever (pyrexia);
- decreased blood pressure;
- hives, skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing (angioedema), itching.
Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people):
- - difficulty breathing (dyspnea);
- digestive problems (dyspepsia);
- contraction of the bronchial muscles (bronchospasm).
Very rare (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):
- severe low blood pressure which, if untreated, can lead to collapse, coma and death (anaphylactic shock), serious allergic reactions (anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction);
- blood loss (hemorrhage).
Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from the available data):
- bronchial obstruction;
- swelling (edema) of the face.
In very rare cases, a rare skin condition characterized by severe blistering and bleeding of the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) and a serious skin reaction (toxic epidermal necrolysis or Lyell's syndrome) have occurred. If these side effects occur, stop treatment immediately.
Also, contact your doctor if you experience prolonged bleeding time (reduced platelet aggregation).
