What it is and what it is used for
LACRISOL is a combination of two active ingredients: benzalkonium chloride and hypromellose. Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound with antiseptic properties and a disinfectant action that prevents the growth of certain types of bacteria and fungi. Hypromellose has emollient and lubricating properties, moisturizes the eyes.
This medicine is indicated for:
- disinfect the eye mucosa;
- hydrate the dry eye in cases of poor hydration (insufficient tear secretion - dry eye syndrome).
Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days of treatment.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use LACRISOL:
- if you are allergic to benzalkonium chloride, hypromellose or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6);
- if the person who is to use this medicine is a child under 12 years of age, unless otherwise indicated by the doctor (See section “Children”).
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using LACRISOL.
Avoid using this medicine:
- for prolonged periods of time, as it can be toxic;
- if you have inflammation, wounds or abrasions of the cornea;
- if you wear contact lenses. In this case, after using LACRISOL, wait at least 15 minutes before putting on your lenses;
- if you are undergoing therapy based on other antiseptics and ophthalmic solutions (See the paragraph “Other medicines and LACRISOL”).
Do not inhale or swallow this medicine as toxic reactions, sometimes fatal, may occur (See section “If you use more LACRISOL than you should”).
During treatment with this medicine, especially for prolonged periods of time, allergic reactions (sensitization phenomena) may occur. In this case, stop the therapy and inform your doctor who will establish an appropriate therapy.
Belzalkonium chloride contained in the medicine may cause eye irritation and may discolour contact lenses.
Children
This medicine should not be given to children under 12 years of age unless otherwise indicated by your doctor (See the section “Do not use LACRISOL”).
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The following side effects may occur:
Frequency not known (the frequency of which cannot be estimated from the available data):
- intolerance reactions, such as burning and irritation of the eyes. These effects are of no consequence and usually do not require changes in treatment.
If you experience any side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
