Name
POLLIVAL 0.5 mg/ml eye drops, solution
Azelastine hydrochloride
What it is and what it is used for
Pollival contains the active substance azelastine hydrochloride which belongs to a group of medicines called anti-allergics (antihistamines). Antihistamines work by preventing the effects of substances, such as histamine, that the body produces as part of an allergic reaction. Azelastine has been shown to reduce inflammation in the eye.
Pollival can be used to treat and prevent eye disorders that occur in association with hay fever (seasonal allergic conjunctivitis) in adults and children aged 4 years and over.
Pollival can be used for eye disorders caused by allergy to substances, such as dust mites or animal hair (perennial allergic conjunctivitis), in adults and children aged 12 years and over.
Pollival is not indicated for the treatment of eye infections.
What you need to know before taking the medicine
Do not use Pollival:
- If you are allergic to azelastine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6)
Warnings and precautions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist before using Pollival
- If you are not sure whether your eye problems are caused by an allergy. Especially if only one eye is affected; if your vision is impaired; or if you have eye pain and no other symptoms in your nose, it may be an infection and not an allergy.
- If the symptoms worsen or last for more than 48 hours without significant improvement despite the use of Pollival.
- If you wear contact lenses.
